How we choose
Five rules, applied to everyone.
The point is independence and range, not agreement. Here's what it takes to be listed.
The rules
Readers pay for it
The person's own site says readers, listeners, subscribers or members fund their work. We link to where they say it.
Their main job isn't at a big media company
If their own bio lists a major network, national paper or big digital outlet as their day job, they aren't listed.
In their own words
We describe what they cover the way they describe it. We don't put political labels on anyone.
A real range
The list spans different perspectives and beats on purpose, from politics to local news to science.
No misinformation peddlers
People known for pushing conspiracy theories, harassment campaigns or health misinformation, as reported by reputable fact-checkers, aren't listed.
What a listing isn't
- It isn't an endorsement of everything they say, or of anyone's politics.
- It isn't a guarantee their funding never changes. Funding is checked on their own pages and rechecked regularly.
- It isn't paid. Nobody pays to be listed, and nobody can pay to be removed.
